Director
Eric Mackey has been the Director of Unicorn Day Care for over 20 years. He is the father of eight children and grandfather of two.
Eric started working in child care in 1990 as an RECE teacher at Alternative Primary School Day Care and Nursery (APS), were he worked both in a grade 3 / 4 classroom as well as the School Age Before and After School Program. Then in 1995, he took on the part time position of Supervisor of the After School Program at Unicorn Day Care, in addition to running the Nursery/Preschool program at APS. Over the next few years, Eric expanded the program at Unicorn to include a Before School Program as well as a full time JK/SK program and eventually a full time Nursery/Preschool program. Currently Unicorn Day Care is licensed for 150 children and provides full time and part time care for children 4 to 12 years of age.
In 2012, Eric was asked by the Board of Cottingham Child Care to consider a merger of the two programs, because with the implementation of Full Day Kindergarten, they felt it would be difficult to remain viable as a standalone program. Eric worked closely with both the Unicorn Day Care and the Cottingham Child Care Boards of Directors and in January 2013 the two programs merged, with Eric overseeing the management of both.
In 2015, with the support of the Unicorn Day Care Board of Directors, Eric opened a full day Toddler and Preschool Early Learning Program at 240 Avenue Road and he now oversees the management of all three childcare programs.
